I was told that the vertical circuit was defective on my TV. I was also told that it would cost $180 to $300 to repair. Tv is 11 years old and have had no problems. Please advise.

Throw the set away and save the money it would cost to repair it, and put that money into a new set.

Shop around for a repair. It should not cost you that much to repair the set. Ask what they would charge to replace the vertical IC and a open resistor. I would bet your MITS has a great picture. When you purchased this set 11 years ago you bought what I would consider a top tier television.
Do you have the tv in an entertainment center as it is large. Remember that new sets are rectangles and not squares like you have. Will you have to replace that as well.
I would not throw it away as you could get a few more years out of it with a decent repair bill and the years you would gain by fixing it would pay for itself when the rectangle tvs come down in price.

Sorry, I gotta disagree with zigzag. I wouldn't put more than $50 in an eleven year old set. You could fix this, and next month the tuner could go out. It's just to iffy.

BTW zigzag, how bout those PACKERS? Die hard GB fan from way before the Favre dynasty.
