:o Can I put diesel fuel into my oil furnace?? The Oil company can't get out to my place until Monday or Tuesday!!!! Will it cause any problems?? ie Will it stink up the house? Is there and additive that can be mixed with the diesel so that it won't stink??

Yes you can. The smell won't be in the home unless you got a bad heat exchanger, or a poor draft.

As Jay said, the diesel will hurt nothing. In fact, diesel is all I burn because of the lower sulfur content thus keeping my heater cleaner. You can also use kerosene if you so desire.

Grady, are you burning Farm or Road grade diesel? I hope farm, otherwise, you'd be paying a lot more... Around here we would be.

I burn dyed road grade, ultra low sulfur (<15ppm). As of October 1, 2007, farm diesel has to be no more than 500ppm or what is refered to as "low sulfur". The only legal use of "high" sulfur is now as heating oil :( . I'd like to see the high sulfur go away period.

The dyed road grade, are you paying extra tax on it?

What is that running a gallon for you vs the regular fuel Oil? Guess I've never heard of anyone doing that for a long term heating like you do. I suppose you may have had a few oil delivery guy asking what's up with that?

Because it is dyed, I can buy it without paying road tax. If Mr. Trucker gets caught with dyed fuel in his truck tank, he's in deep do-do. I think it runs about 20 cents a gallon more than regular heating oil but it's worth it to me for reduced maintenance & the environmental benefits. A few of my customers also burn it. Another benefit is I can burn it in my compact tractor without having to go to the store & get a can of road diesel.
