hi. i have two of these heaters. each apartment gets one.(two family) model number UG080D10U-1C two stage heaters. there are 8" vents(octopus style) all over the basement. these are pretty good running heaters -but- :D
1. there are two adjustable screw-plates on the gas feeds inside the unit. you can loosen or tighten the air flow mixture going threw them. they have never been adjusted. the flames look really yellow to me. isn't blue the more natural color? i ask this because i don't think the "heat " is hot enough. :(
1.a should i insulate the ducts in the basement?
2. the fan squeaks. where do you put the oil drops? can you?
my heating bill is unusually high for a 1200 sq foot apartment.(high ceilings) in a old house, i have done alot of things. new windows, sealed up a crawl space, door draft seals, digital thermostat, adjusted vents to maximize heat to rooms that need it, and yet my bill is two-three hundred a month in the new england winter! :wall:
i would like to lower this.

How do you know this is two stage? Do you have a two stage t-stat wired up to this??

The plates should be open to allow air into the burners. If they are open, the burners may need to be cleaned out. When was the last time you had a full service of cleaning/tune up?

Is this in the basement or crawl space? (You said crawl below) If basement, is a space that is used/living area? If it is not, and have no need for heat at all, then you can wrap, them but then you are not going to get the "warmth" on your floor, and the floors are going to be cold. If it a crawl space, then for sure.
2. the fan squeaks. where do you put the oil drops? can you?
Is your blower belt or direct drive? Is the noise from the motor or blower cage? If you got a belt drive, how is the belt? You should see two small caps on the end of the motor, most newer motor don't allow you to do so.

How old is the apt/home? Hows' the insulation in the attic, and walls?
not sure what's the age is on the furnace, but I am guessing you may be getting 60% effecent at best? A new furnace you can get as high as 96%. Also your old furnace may be oversized, and over sized equipment burns more gas when it short cycles, than the one sized right with longer run time.

thanks for the time on this here goes:
1 it is a basement. only my living room is crawl. the duct for that coes in at the bottom of the wall. i own the house. the two stage is labed on a plaque with the model number. house is 150 years old. it does have vinyl siding (and gets sun exposure) haven;t seen the fan yet. and lastly no. never been cleaned. i need to call someone who can look at old units. these units are prob from the eightys? the thermostat only has two wires coming to it. of course just becasue the plaque on the unit says "two stage" doesn't mean it is.....

Wrap the ducts that are in the crawl space for sure.
As for two stage, it could very possable be one.. I know the older model used an outdoor temp bulb, and when it got down to say. 20˚ outside, the bulb would switch the gas valve to high fire.
But yeah get someone out there to take a look at it. B/W hasn't been around since the 80's.. York took over the B/W around that time.
