I have what I believe to be a mercury vapor bulb, mogul base, 8" long. No legible markings anywhere. (See photo. The camera angle makes it look longer than 8" but it is in fact just about 8" exactly.) I took it in to the supply house and was told they don't have it, and it was not in their GE catalog. I looked briefly at Osram and didn't see it there either.
Do I understand correctly that the only way to figure out the wattage, and to confirm that it's MV is by looking for markings on the ballasts?
I also read about MV fixtures being regulated out of existence in 2008 although bulbs will continue to be available. Can I get an opinion or two on retrofitting to sodium or metal halide, if those are options, or just replacing the whole fixture?

There are few place still stock the 175 W MV bulbs the last place i know they still stock is in the big box store i am sure they still have it on hand.
but those 175 W MV dusk to dawn luminaires are getting to the point it is all ready anquite by now it been around for so many years and those dusk and dawn luminaires you show us the photos of them.
the new one are Metal Haldie [ more whiteish colour simuair to the some big box store have them in there and industrail used them]
Of course we have High pressure sodium that fine with some area where the " colour " is not really imporant at all they have pretty bright orange colour.
other one is relative new but they come in CFL as well kinda like supersizsed CFL [ aka SCFL]
IMO with SCFL it is ok to me but to find replacement bulbs somehow tricky and also some of them dont work very well in cold weather escpally that true when get colder than + 10 °F [ i dont have much exprance with them so hard to say about this ]
but you may have to use the judgement when replaceing the old MV dusk to dawn luminaires to more modern one they will save even more engery and if slected right the bulb life will be about the same as MV.
Merci , Marc
