in order to remove the intake PVC from the intake air manifold on this high eff condensing furnace, I may need separate the PVC piping. Is it permissible or advisable to re-attach the cut portion of the PVC with a Fernco type rubber fitting, or must I reattach with a glued (welded) PVC connector?

thanks

Provided you are not restricting air flow for the intake for your furnace it won't make a difference in operation. Check with local codes to be sure it's not a violation. This is allowed where I live on the intake, but definately not on the exhaust.
