all the rooms in my house have wood paneling. i would

This isn't a faux finish, but it definitely changes the look of the room.
When we were renting and the landlady wouldn't let us do anything to the paneling, I took some sheeting material and just stapled it to the walls. I folded it at the top and used cardboard strips like you would for upholstery. A few quick hits with a 1/4" staple and it held in place. I secured the side seams with some double-sided fabric tape and the bottom with more staples at the top of the baseboard. Even landlady was impressed with how good it looked.
This would work with regular fabric, too. It has the look of wallpaper without all the aggravation, and you can change it out easily.
