I am having a new house built that will have tall ceilings, tile floors and lots of windows. I am concerned about the sounds 'echoing' around the large rooms so I would like to use fabrics to try and soften the sound effects.

Since I will have large windows, most of them sliding doors, I am thinking of using Vertical Blinds. When I have briefly looked at fabric selections available from the blind mfgrs (mostly Home Depot suppliers), I haven't been impressed with the options. I am thinking I could make my own fabric 'vanes', free standing, not inserted into any plastic vane nor glued on any plastic or cardboard frame.
Does anyone have any advice on this? Does it sound feasible or should I just settle for what is commercially available. And, if any of you have done this, can you give me any hints on how to proceed?

Appreciate any advice either way....

I haven't run across any blinds I thought would make much difference in sound. Maybe drapes or curtains would be a better choice.

You need some sort of stiffiner or I'd think they'd just flop around and because there are openings in between, this wouldn't be the best solution for reducing noise. I agree with Mitch about draperies and think about using blackout or thermal lining and have them interlined, if possible. If you really want a shade or blind, insulated romans would be a better choice.

Go green. Thermal insulated draperies would conserve energy and absorb sound.
