We use over the air to get our HD. We get about 50 HD and digital channels. The S-VHS VCR is useless, IMO. I am looking for a recorder, either to DVD-R/W or to a hard disk. I need a tuner for the HD stations and a timer like the VCR. Is there a unit out there in the $200 range that will do what I need? Also, I would like it to do at least 720p.

No and yes. You will not find anything that records in HD DVD for $200. You will have to spend more like $450+ for a HD DVD recorder/player.
You can record HD to a HD DVR which uses a hardisk, and these can be provided by the local cable/DirectTV provider, but there is no way to record in 720p+ to a DVD without spending big bucks.
