Hello-
I just wanted clarification the proper cable I should be using to connect my satellite reciever and projector.
I purchased an HDMI to DVI cable last night (HDMI on the receiver and DVI-D jack on the projector) but for whatever reason, the display does not come in and the projector says NO REG.
The package the cable came in did not say whether it is DVI-D, DVI-A, or DVI-D, but I do know the DVI end of it missing the middle 6 pins (it was made this way) but the jack has pin slots for all of the pins. I am under the assumption I have the wrong cable.......any suggestions as to what to get? I am assuming HDMI to DVI-D cable will work, but I only see packages for HDMI to DVI......help??

Can you provide brands & model numbers of the sat box and projector?

Well, you should have a owners manual for this projector and it should tell you what DVI cable you need.
DVI-D = digital only
DVI-I Digital and analog
Also check your projector settings to make sure you have selected this DVI port as your signal.

I just saw the update in the other thread, which mentioned that you had an NEC projector. A couple of quick searches turned up NEC as "finnicky" when fed HDMI from a DTV cable box or satellite.
The projector seems to be compatible with dual-link DVI, while the cable's DVI connector is missing the pins for a dual link (2x speed) connection. Therefore, 1080p won't work.
The difference between DVD-D and DVD-I can be determined by the pins above & below the horizontal spade. No pins = DVI-D. Four pins = DVD-I (or DVD-A, which doesn't apply here becuase it's analog-only and missing some pins in the main section).

I did have an NEC projector, but I just got a new one. It is a Sharp XR-30X
The satellite receiver is made by 700 and th emodel # is HR20 (it is a directv receiver)
I got the HDMI to DVI-D cable to work yesterday, but now its not working...it actually says NOT REG (for not registering)
That is different than no signal, but I cannot figure out what the heck I have to do to get the input to register.
I am puzzled at this point in time

Do other outputs from that sat box work? Not registering sounds more like a sat box issue. Just a thought.

Agreed. Have you tried using the Direct TV's remote and messing with the Format settings? (Turn off "Native").
The projector should recognize all of the HD formats except 1080p (but will display them with black bars at the top & bottom of the screen).
The manual says the DVI-D input uses HDCP. Maybe the copy protection isn't handshaking? It may have worked temporarily because the program that was on at the time wasn't copy protected.
