I have a small leak coming from my shower. Upon inspection I have found that the grout? caulking? has developed small gaps between the tiles and at the base where tub meets wall the caulking has become very dry and brittle to the touch. I believe that the caulking/grout is about 20 years of age.
I cannot at this time do a complete remodel so my question is do you use grout between the wall tiles or caulking?
I know at the base you would use caulking.
I have at the present time an oscillating fan to help dry out the area.

The joint between the tub and the tile should be caulked not grouted. A good silicone caulk like GE Silicone II for baths and kitchens is a good choice. Remove the old caulk and let the area dry out thoroughly before attempting to recaulk it.
If you have grout cracking from between the tiles that may be a sign that there are other problems. Do you know whats behind the tile, perhaps sheetrock, cement board, something else?

I don't know what is behind the tile and yes the grout is cracking from the tub to about halfway up.
When I scraped out the old caulking between tub and wall I was using a box cutter and getting the remnants of something fiberous (?), for the want of a better word. I have no idea whats behind the tile
I was afraid that someone would say that there may a more serious problem lurking......
