Almost all major broadcasters are in HD.

Fox
CBS
ABC
NBC
ESPN
and so on.

Of course there are addition costs. If you are not receiving all these channels and then some in HD, then most likely your local cable carrier chooses not too. Alot has to do with contracts and $$ between the provider and the broadcasters.

They are slowly getting better though. By 2009, all channels will be broadcasted in digital/HD.

All digital is not HD. Just because it is digital does not mean it is HD. There is much digital that is not HD.

Yes it is a cost issue. I'm not exactly sure what programming you are referring to, but all current primetime shows have been in HD for at least the past 3+ years (aside from some lower budget test shows here and there). Obviously syndicated shows on Fox that were never shot in HD will still play in SD (simpsons/seinfeld).

I don't know about local news, daytime soaps and talk shows. I'm guessing they're still mixed HD/SD, although soaps are probably HD.

My brothers kid has a great job in southern florida working for the DISNEY CHANNEL and is in the production field. His expierence is that all BIG production companys shoot the scenes in HD now but are also able to convert to SD from what was shot with the cameras. Sometimes the powers that be will pay only for the cheaper version (SD) thus saving money. I think as techonology moves foward they will be replacing the cameras and associatied equipment like we replaced our VCR's with DVD players. I will take time but if the costs to produce in HD is passed on now
maybe there will be a day when HD is all that will be available.
