How was the old light wired?

OH no! Not another "I removed the light without memorizing the wiring" trick! The best thing you can do when entering a zone you are not familiar with is to take a digital picture of things so you can put them back like they came down. Otherwise you are going to have to do some testing with a voltage detector/meter. Do you have that equipment available?

Either you are not in north america or your brown wires are really just dirty white wires. If that is the case connect your new light between thw the white wires and the red wire.

If you are in North America, proceed with extreme caution. White wires that have turned brown often have been repeatedly overloaded, and the insulation is "cooked". Check carefully to see if the insulation is brittle.
