dvd player just recently became sketchy.
will not recognize some discs randomly, sometimes plays root of disc and becomes choppy or stops. sometimes it will play one dvd but not the others in the tray. wtf?
i have recently done some in -home construction so it has been dusty & dvd has been moved.
did laser get dirty or bumped?

Things I learned while gutting & rebuilding my kitchen:
#1: Drywall dust gets into everything, no matter how hard you try to contain it.
#2: It never leaves.
Try a DVD cleaner disc. It can't hurt. The problem with them is they only clean the center of the lens without getting the gunk off the edges. If that's the case, a cotton swab moistened with water (just enough to grab dust) and a very light touch on the lens may help.
If the device took a bump it may have knocked the laser out of aligment, but it would have had to be a drop or very hard bump. If you take it apart and poke around in there to try and realign it, you'll probably wind up buying a new one.
