I have a 25 in x 35 in top that I want to build a base for. Is there a specific height I should use? I want to place a shelf within the base also. Thanks.

The wood in your lathe should be at an ideal working height. So if you'll be standing, it might be that you would want the center of the lathe to be 42" from the floor. If sitting on a stool, it changes all that. Go with whatever is comfortable for you.
