I am preparing to repair a lengthly, but minor, drywall crack using tape and compound. (1st try.) In applying the compound, it refers to "feathering out the edges." What does this mean?

It means to start by using a 3 inch putty knife for the first coat, when that dries, sand down the edges a little. Repeat this but on the second coat, use a 6inch knife, then 8-12" knife.

You do not want any edges. Sanding down the edges to make it nice and smooth is feathering.

Search Youtube.com for "How to mud drywall" or similar. There are many good videos that show you.

Most drywall taping [and repairs] takes 3 coats of mud to get it right. As Mark pointed out, using a wider knife for each consecutive coat will 'feather' it out. You only need to sand the final coat providing the first 2 were neatly applied.

Don't oversand!! If you over sand the drywall paper or into the tape - both will fuzz up.
