I tried cleaning my fireplace using a shop vac, and FORGOT to put a bag in.....so, for about 10 seconds I blew all the soot at a high rate of speed onto a painted wall, a curtain, all over the carpet and a couch. Some of the painted surfaces I was able to clean with a rag and water. I steam cleaned the carpet, with marginal results and the couch scares the hell out of me. My wife is ready to kill me, and I'm just about ready to call the professionals in, but that will cost me a fortune. Any ideas on techniques or products would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

I'd bite the bullet and pay for this to be cleaned. Probably cost less in the long run, if stress and an upset spouse are added into the equation.

Water and oily soot do not mix and compounds cleaning problems. For soot clean up dry sponges, which are chemically treated, are used dry like big erasers to collect soot from walls and surfaces. Professional carpet and upholstery cleaning is recommended.
