I've got a Whirlpool LSN1000PQ washer that I bought in October of 2004. I moved into my house in September of 2006 and ever since, the washer has fits of shaking. Sometimes the shaking is worse than others, particularly when there are heavy items (jeans, towels, etc.). I usually try and move items around in the washer to try and balance things out, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a loading problem. If I remove everything from the washer and put it in spin cycle, it still shakes (although not as bad as with towels), even with nothing in the basket.

I put water in the washer and checked the water level compared to the holes in the basket. The basket was considerably tilted towards the rear of the washer. I put a level on the cabinet and adjusted the feet until everything was level. The basket was still cosiderably biased towards the back.

I removed the cabinet and inspected all the springs and bolts. Everything is tight, the springs are all still there (3 large black ones that lay horizontal and one skinny silver one on the back that acts as a counter weight for the motor). The only thing I noticed is a lot of black powder on the ground below the center of the basket. I don't know what it is in washer terms, but it's what I would describe as a differential in a vehicle. It looks like it takes a horizontal spinning motor and turns it 90 degrees into a vertical shaft that spins the basket.

What all this means... is that I'm out of ideas. I'm not sure if somehow the shaft got bent, if the springs have lost tension, or if it's something else entirely.

I've tried to be as detailed as possible... so does anybody have any clue what else I should check? If pictures would help, let me know where to point and I'll snap a few.

Thanks!

Reach into the washer & grab ahold of inner tub. Does it seem loose from transmission shaft? The tub is held into place on shaft by a lg. nut that may have come loose. To get at it, remove softner dispenser from top of agitator, remove plastic cover under dispenser, remove bolt & lift agitator off. You will see the nut that holds the tub tight on the transmission shaft.
