I'm about to pull up old rotting redwood decking and am considering replacing with Trex. Would appreciate any advice on using Trex and any negatives anyone has experienced with Trex. Also, would appreciate any comments on other brands of vinyl/wood decking. Thanks from a new member.

Just Right,

Welcome to DoItYorself.com and the Deck forum.

Trex ran into some problems with their product a few years back, which appear to have been corrected. What they are producing now appears to be a good product. However, finding it will prove to be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. Most retailers, at least around here, have quit carrying it, but it can be ordered.

There are several other good composites on the market that are readily available. Check with your local lumberyards and see what they are carrying.

We replaced our wood decking boards with Trex Madeira in April 2007 and still love it. We were concernd about the mold problems reported earlier but were not going to put down wood again and Trex was available both at Home Depot and Lowes around here. We had no problems building it since it is similar to wood. It has been almost a year now and no mold or other problems. We did make sure we had the recommended support but did not always adhere to the spacing requirements between trex & trex contact and did not have any problems with warping.
