I have a craftsman lawnmower 917.270662 which cranks and idles fine. However, when you engage the blade or the drivetrain it dies. Is it the individual switches? Or a central cut off? Can it be bypassed to check?

The fact that it's cutting off with the PTO as well as the clutch would point towards the seat safety switch, I'd start there.

I'll second that...

seat switch.

Any update Apexman? Was it the seat switch, like all others, and myself, believe it to be?
