I have a Kenmore elite over the range mircowave. It is stainless steel and is the ultra wave design where tray moves back and forth as oppose to a turntable going around.
When I use this microwave for a few different dishes and have run it for maybe 8 minutes or so in all it will seem to keep running for a couple minutes after cooking time has elapsed. The cooking time shows that it is finished, the light inside goes out and the table stops moving but it still sound like it is running. Itdoes not happen at all if I run it for only 3 or 3 minutes.
Never seen a microwave do this before.
I think it may be just a fan to cool unit down but I am not sure. Not too crazy about opening door for fear of being cooked myself.
Have gone through manual and there is no mention anywhere that this might occur. Is this just a cool down cycle and is it normal?

I have to admit that i've never seen a microwave oven do that either but here are some things to check:
When you first turn it on can you differentiate between the sound of the magnetron and the other sounds? Does the oven overheat/overcook what you put into it? It might just be a cool down fan like you're thinking but you need to listen for the magnetron. Does the noise stop if you open the door? Does the owners manual say anything about it?
