I have an antique table made of "gesso" which is sort of like plaster of paris. It cannot be sanded or stripped, but can be painted. Gesso is that ornate trim usually painted gold on picture frames. I want to paint the gesso a "faux wood" color and then stain it to look like cherry or mahogany. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Back in the day they sold 'antiquing' kits. They contained a base paint and a glaze for creating the wood grain look. You will want to pick a paint and a glaze that are close in color. For faux grain, you will want to go with a glaze that is slightly darker. This author provides a simple explanation of the basics here http://www.thehomeguild.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/112-Faux-Graining-White-Baseboard.html

This link is even better. It has a video. Just click in the middle of the picture under the title How to Faux Grain Wood: http://hubpages.com/hub/Faux-Graining-Wood

Thank you! I will try the techniques on a sample project and see how this works. This table was a giftand I really want it to look nice for when my friend comes by to see her "baby." Thank you again!
