I recently purchased an old house which I am slowly rehabbing - built prior to 1850 - an old Baltimore rowhouse. The stair railing and bannister need to be stripped and refinished. What is the best way to strip both? It seems I have stain on the bannister and paint on the railing - and tons of layers of grime on each. The newel posts are rather ornate with lots of nooks and crannies and lots of layers of "gunk." I've never done any refinishing; so, I would appreciate any and all advice on products, techniques, etc. Thanks!

CAUTION---there IS lead based paint on that railing, guaranteed. Do not sand it!! There are probably restrictions in Baltimore that do not allow you to do the work. Check local ordinances.

But IMHO, there are stripping chemicals that will keep the mixture wet so there is no dispersion anywhere else in the house.
