Does the width of the decking boards make any difference other than eye appeal? I was going to utilize a 2x6 lumber for the top decking, but I am considering alternating a 2x12 with the 2x6 just for the looks. So, would utilizing a wider board be an issue? The deck will be 20 x 24.

The only problem I could forsee would be if the 2x12 cups. Being twice the width gives twice the potential for cupping or buckling.

aps612,
Don't use 2X12's for deck boards. Like badeyeben pointed out, the WILL cup, and they will also split more than a 2X6 will.

To add to what has already been said; a 2x12 will shrink twice as much as a 2x6 and leave a wider gap between the boards. Do not use a 2x12.

Thanks for the replys. I had not considered shrinkage and cupping. Back to the original plans then.
