I just completed the installation of new doors (all into existing frames) in our home using 6-panel hollow core doors from HD. The last door, not yet installed, is a 30 x 80 Masonite Door for the Master Bedroom (Not Pre-Hung). These doors are much heavier than the hollow-core doors (I believe 54lbs). How many hinges do I need to use? our existing door frame has 2 hinge mortices. I have read "Heavy Duty" Hinges may be necessary. Do they make 3 1/2" Heavy Duty Hinges? Do I need to install 3 Hinges? Can I get away with using the 2 existing 3 1/2" Regular Hinges?

Thanks,

TSH

Are you sure you don't have exterior door blanks. Interior doors are normally 1 3/8 thick, exterior, 1 /34". But interior doors are normally hollow core and, as such, usually not heavy. To answer the question, doors that heavy might need 3 hinges to prevent sagging over time. In the short run, two will work. Use long screws in the top hinge to get into the house framing.
