We removed a fireplace mantel from our living room and would like to insert a piece of carpet where the mantel was. We have a carpet remnant that matches the rest of the carpet in the room. Will the seams be visible? What is the process for matching the seams and how do we install?

This is a job that's tough to do well DIY - I'd hire a pro. Also, keep in mind that there's probably enough wear on the existing carpet that the patch will be noticable for it's better condition.

Man, I HATE admitting Mitch might possibly be right on this one, but, with teeth clenched, I have to grudgingly admit it, he's rrrrrr, rrrrrr, I just can't say it. I just can't. What you propose is not simple for a pro, let alone a DIY project. If you want to tackle it, I'll be happy to talk you through it, but the chances you'll get the seams to go away are slim. As Mitch pointed out, you'll have a wear pattern difference, possible exposure to sun light with the resulting fading, and the inherent difficulty involved in seaming the stuff together. It is certainly doable, and with enough talking back and forth you should be able to pull it off, but it will take some time to get you ready to tackle it.
