I have a bedroom set that is black lacquer like, not sure if its veneer or what, but I want to strip it and refinish the wood underneath. Its not high quality furniture so I'm not sure if its even worth trying to do. I've gotten a stripper suitable for all kinds of finishes, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any suggestions??

If it's lacquer, lacquer thinner will remove it. If it's shellac, denatured alcohol will remove it. If it's a shellac/lacquer combo, then a 50/50 mixture of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol will remove it.

if it is an acid-catalyzed lacquer, Lacquer thinner should not touch it. I like Dad's Easy Spray, it tends to remove almost anything.

Take some lacquer thinner on rag and wipe an area, if the black comes off then use that. try with the alcohol as well.

Is your stripper a water-based product? if so, it may take a day or two for it to work.
