I noticed in the channel of my wood cutting board there was a black area that was not black before. I assume it was because of moisture and possibly mildew. I have tried to scrub it with soap and water. Also, I tried to sand it off with fine grit sandpaper, but with little success.

What can i do to get rid of this and not have it spread. The rest of the board is in good shape.

You could try regular household bleach 25% in water for this area. Let it sit a few minutes until the black turns lighter, rinse, and scrub out with a brush. Then clean and store as usual.
