I recently bought a house with a beautifull garden window. Unfortunately the side window that opens is stuck in the locked position. Does anyone have advice on how to unlock and or websites that might give diagrams, instructions or advice.

Thanks.

Welcome to the DIY forums!

Sorry to hear about your window trouble. We'll try to help. First of all, is it a casement window? (one that cranks out) If you have any digital photos, they might be helpful. I'm curious to know if the "reveal" along the bottom of the window is straight with the frame (when viewed from the exterior) or if it has sagged, and perhaps is binding on the frame and latch. Perhaps something is pinched. Having a helper insert a prybar between the frame and the sash (from the outside) and gently prying *up* on the side of the window that you want to open- while you work the lock on the inside- might release the binding and allow you to unlock the window.

But I'm just guessing. It's pretty hard to diagnose a window that you can't see and touch! :)

I'm thinking that the vent is probably single hung, rather than a casement. But the problem, and probably the cure is about the same. The frame of the garden window has sagged, and you can't open the vent. WHY it sagged probably has something to do with the installer using a $200 garden window rather than the $600 model.

Another question is the method of support. Is it supported from above like a bay window, or from below. If from above, did they allow a turnbuckle for adjustment or just tie it up with hay baling wire?

Garden window are designed to be self-supporting. No additional support should be needed once the nail fin is attached to the studs. They only have a 12" projection.

I know, but I have my doubts this is a "garden" window, because the ones I have seen aren't in the category of "beautiful". But a bay could be described as such, and I wonder if the OP is describing a bay instead of a garden. Just curious.

Good point. I don't know.

Omullens, any chance you can post a picture of it?
