I have about a 20 year old central bath/shower faucet two handle. I keep getting dripping from the spout I believe its the cold water. Is there a quick fix to this without having to get a plumber and replacing the whole stem? Will a new packing nut etc help or is it better to just replace the whole stem? Also its a little hard to get at (the inners because of the packing) I do have the part list but curious what other options there are?

It is leaking from the spout because the washer at the end of the stem is bad and must be replaced. You should replace both sides(hot and cold) and also check the condition of the seat(the peice the washer presses against to seal) for any flaws that could be contributing to your leak.

The "packing nut" is not the problem. If packing,o-rings,or any other part of the stem body was at fault your leak would be around the handle not out of the spout.

If the stem is damaged beyond repair then replacement will be needed but you will not know what it's condition may be until you remove and examine it.

Thanks for that info. also is turning the water off in the whole house cause any problems. I have no individual shut off valves so need to do that. Have well water and pump etc

Sounds like you have no choice but to turn off the whole house.I suspect there is a valve inline from your well pump and that all you'd need to do is turn it off.

What is the difference between Direct sweat and I P union. I see Central brass has two listed on their website/replacement parts

Assume this refers to the entire faucet assembly.....direct sweat directly solders to copper pipe/tubing and I P means inside pipe which means it threads/screw on to a threaded peice of pipe or soldered on adapter from copper to pipe thread etc.
