I just bought a house and one of the windows (in one bedroom) is stained with a very dark stain I don't care for. Is there any way to strip the stain out so I can stain it a lighter color or is stripping not possible with stain because it penetrates the wood so far? I was wondering if bleaching it would help.

Welcome to the forums!

Stain can be stripped but it is no easy task. Stripper should remove all the poly/varnish and some of the stain. Sanding should remove the rest of the stain.

You need to be extra carefull using a chemical stripper on a window - especially if it is a newer one with any plastic parts/tracks - stripper can melt them
