I am in the latter portion of a remodel. I have relocated the back exit from ground level, to new french doors in our kitchen about 4' up. Currently my contractor has a wooden ramp with some wood strips, and I added some roofing shingles for traction. The plan is to build a deck out these doors. Due to a family emergency, I had to leave town for the two week window I had scheduled for building the deck (myself). I have postponed it until Spring (I don't need final inspection until next Fall).

I am going to build a "temporary" staircase that goes from ground level to the house, attaching directly to the deck ledger. As there is no upper landing (and I don't want to build one), any railings I put on will be in conflict with our outswing French doors. This is OK for the most part as I can center it on just one door, and allow the door to open past 90 degree's. When we need to move large objects in/out, however, I would like to be able to remove the railing. Is there any kind of mounting bracket that I can slip the 2x4 into. Granted, this would not meet code for weight bearing, but the alternative is to have no railing (or have to remove it when needed).

thanks!

I know you said you don't want to build a landing, but not only would it solve your railing problem, I think it would help in a way I don't think has yet occurred to you - it's nice to have a big landing to step from or onto when you've got the end of a couch or table in your hands trying to maneuver through the door.

One of the reasons that I don't want to do that is that I am doing some work directly below the door. I am doing drain tiling, a small retaining wall, and a setting up a brick pad for under the deck. The stairs will already be in the way of the last item, but a landing would require posts, which would get in the way of all of the above. Also, I just want to keep the design real simple as I have limited time to work on it.

I've seen flanges that can be screwed into a floor and have a top opening that you can slip a 4x4 into then screw into the 4x4. You could just leave the screws out of the 4x4. Not sure about how safe it would be, though.

Don't remember where I saw them, but I bet you could find something like that at a big box home improvment store.

Install your temorary railing with 3 1/2 in. deck screws. This will make removal easy when necessary. Use the screws with T-25 Torx heads. Good luck with your project.
