Cleaning and Stain Removal - Can water damaged sheetrock be cleaned?

I have some moldy drywall in my living room (damaged by rain water from roof). I cleaned it with bleach and repainted the area with several coats and it still smells. I assume that because the mold was visible that the entire thickness of the panel was damaged. I have some rather intricate molding in this area that I'd rather not disturb if I don't have to. Any ideas?

If the drywall is solid, the bleach should be enough. If it's soft, better to replace it. Are you sure the smell is the drywall?

.......and was the mold limitted to the front of the drywall.

Might be a good idea to cut a hole in an easily repaired spot to inspect the other side of the drywall.

By now cutting a hole in the drywall and trying to ventilate or dry would be a risk of exposing the whole house to a large amount of mold spores, due to moving air. I hate to say this but best thing to do would be to remove the trim and REPLACE the drywall, insulation and studs may also be effected. Check with your homeowners. Trust me when i say its best to get rid of that mold now. Years and i mean years down the road it will still be there...if you ever try to sell the home it may be found and the value will drop.

Water in the wall void tends to result in wet insulation and mold and mildew growth.

What course of action did you wind up taking with the drywall?
