I am going to stomp a ceiling with drywall mud. The ceiling is smooth with a gloss enamel finish, probably oil base as it is a very old house. Should I paint on a bonding agent or just light sand before applying the mud?

Usually a good sanding is all that's needed but with oil base enamel I feel better using a solvent based primer first - too much work to take any chances ;)
