HELLO THERE WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME WITH THIS TOILET ODOUR THATS ABSOLUTELY MAKING ME SICK. I RECENTLY HAD A TOILET INSTALLED IN MY ENSUITE. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLATION I COULD SMELL THIS ODOUR COMING FROM THE TOILET. I DONT HAVE A SEPTIC TANK BUT HAVE ANOTHER TOILET IN THE HOUSE. WHAT CAN I DO TO ELIMINATE THE ODOUR?? WOULD INSTALLING A AIR PIPE FIX THIS PROBLEM?? AND IF SO HOW WOULD I DO THIS??? IF ANYONE COULD PROVIDE ME WITH SOME DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
THANK YOU

REGARDS

Hi Vixstar - Are you sure the odor is from the toilet? The bowl is equipped with a trap. The water in the bowl fills the trap and prevents sewer gases from entering the room from the toilet. What other drains are in the room?
While it's possible the gases may be coming from a poor seal, usually that would be accompanied by a water leak.
You mention adding an "air pipe". If you are talking about a vent, one should have been installed when the toilet was put in. Any other drains gurgling when the toilet is flushed?

thank you for yr reply
when toilet was installed the plumber said there most likely was no need to put an air vent in, but that proved to be untrue. As far as leaks, there are no leaks anywhere. The initial installation of the toilet is when the odour appeared. Where would you assume there would be leaks????

Was this just a replacement??? Or did he run all new pipe for the new toilet??? If so Id say you do need a vent pipe on it

Vixstar - All plumbing fixtures with a drain require some sort of vent. Usually it is a system of pipes that extend above the roof. They provide air to replace the water flowing in the drains.
If the toilet was simply a replacement for an existing toilet there probably is a vent hidden in a wall. If this is a new installation and the plumber provided only a drain, you may have a problem. However, lack of a vent shouldn't cause the toilet to produce an odor as long as there is water in the bowl.
If the toilet has no vent and there are other fixtures (vanity, tub, shower)in the room on the same drain, the toilet could be syphoning the water from their traps. A dry trap will allow sewer gases to enter the room.
Run some water in all the fixtures. See if the odor disappears. Flush the toilet and listen for gurgling noises in each drain. If you hear gurgling you have a vent problem.

thank you so much for your help appreciate it very much. Its nice to know and experience the kindness of many people all around the world. I'm going to investigate the basin and shower as you said and see if the odour ceases. Let you know the outcome.
Thanx again
