I've been doing some research, and I've seen a few posts that indicate mixing grout with a drill attachment might not be the best idea. Is this generally true? Due to the possibility of forming air bubbles?

I'm getting ready to grout a bathroom floor, and shower with sanded polyblend grout.

What would be a good technique to mix the grout?

I use a tulip bulb auger with the tip cut off to mix grout, especially in smaller amounts for not so large rooms. You won't have to worry about air bubbles in it. After you mix it thoroughly be sure to allow it to set for a few minutes before you begin application.

I always mix grout by hand for that very reason - air bubbles. A margin trowel is all you need.:)

Excessive amounts of entrained air in any cement based mixture will weaken the strength of the mixture when cured. So the addition of extra air should be avoided.

The same for too much water, so the mixture should always be as thick as possible so long as it can be thoroughly mixed and worked with.

Well I mixed up my first batch last night and did my floor. I started mixing by hand, then went to a drill mixer to make the mix even, then let it sit for a few minutes. What I ended up with was a mix that I could form into a ball with my hands, and it would mostly keep it's shape. At first I thought it might be a tad dry, but it filled the joints nicely, and cleaned up rather well.
