I need to install a wood (probably oak) hand rail down the stairs into our basement. It will be fastened to the wall the entire length of the rail. I know I could use a standard round wall rail, with brackets, but I'm looking for something that will hug the wall as close as possible, so I don't lose too much space in the stair way. Does anyone here have any experience with such matters, and if so, have something that fits this description?
Thanks!

Bruce: The use of regular handrail and standards will space it out from the wall the appropriate amount. You need to leave enough space on the wall side for a quick grab. Having it too close may tend to keep someone from being able to fully grasp the rail.

The normal hand rail wall attachments are made to code. anything less is a very bad and dangerous situation.
