Does anyone know of a link that shows how to install a drop in gas cooktop? I'm mainly interested in the location and orientation of the gas line/shutoff valve. I'm using a 36" cabinet base.
Thanks.

Normal entrance of the gas line will be to the right rear, but it shouldn't cause a problem if it is in another location, since you will be using a gas flex line from the shut off valve to the cook top anyway. Hope this helped.

A picture's worth a thousand words. Anyone know of a picture or diagram anywhere on the web?

Don't need a thousand words to explain it, but you can go to http://homebuilding.thefuntimesguide.com/2006/10/installgasrange.php and see how to do it.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help. I'm installing a drop-in gas cooktop, not a stove. Among other things, I'm trying to determine if I can fit a drawer in the cabinet under the cooktop. Thanks for trying, but I'm still looking for a good picture or diagram showing a typical hookup with the location and orientation of the gas line, shutoff valve and connection to the cooktop.

Is this a new cooktop? If so, there should be a diagram in the installation manual. If you don't have that go to the manufacturer's website and find the range by model number. Most manufacturers have specs & installation manuals that can be printed out. If it's not new still go to that manufacturer's website and check out similar models to see to see how they suggest mounting it. From my experience installing solid surface countertops, most gas ranges are about 4" deep from the countertop, so only a shallow drawer is possible, but it can be done. If the hookup is on the bottom of the range you may have to cut a few inches off the back of the drawer to allow room for the regulator. Most drawers are 22" front to back. The gas line will have to be fitted close to the back of the cabinet to allow lower drawers to operate. The shutoff valve is typically at the back bottom of the cabinet, but could be elsewhere. I hope this helps.

I haven't yet purchased the cooktop, but I've looked at the installation instructions for a number of models of gas cooktops on the internet. None show a complete picture, and "rough-in" instructions are vague.

I get the feeling there is no such thing as a 'typical' installation. I'm roughing in my gas line now (complete kitchen remodel) and just trying to determine the best location for the line entering the cabinet. The gas pipe will come out of the wall entering the back of the cabinet. I assume from there, it's just a matter of hooking it up with a flexible gas line. I'm just concerned with cluttering up the inside of the cabinet with an inefficient location or direction. Pictures can be helpful, but apparently hard to come by.

When it comes to appliances, there are no typical hooks ups.
even within appliance lines.

Rough in dimensions for a cooktop are a function of the cooktop itself. Until you commit to the purchase, I would not even think of roughing it in.

Once you are committed to the cooktop, the manufacturers instructions will show you where the gas line is comming in.
If you go on line to the manufactureres site, they may very well have a schematic that you can access even before you make the purchase. Or.... you might call the mfrs customer service and ask to speak to a tech. Certainly they can tell you.

Relative to the drawer, I installed a gas cooktop (jennair) not the downdraft model) over a 36" 3 drawer base cabinet. I was luckey in that I did not have to make modificatios to the drawer for the regulator.

As for roughing in the gas line ( pre-purchase), I would bring it up through the back of the cabinet in the center. With flex lines you will not have that far to traverse.
