I would like to build a ceramic shower in the space where the fiberglass bath tub/shower is placed. But my fear is the drain system my not be compatible or require digging into the slab to modify. any comments?

Your biggest problem may indeed be the drain line. Most tub drains are plumbed with 1 /1/2" waste line but showers by code need 2". If you have 1 1/2" you'll need to replace it back to the stack.

Tubs are usually installed on the plywood subfloor, so it won't be a big deal to cut into the plywood to fix the drain. I've just done one and it wasn't hard.

The 2 inch drain may be the code requirement, but the 1.5 inch will drain fine if you're not concerned about meeting code.

This is a slab, so no plywood floor.

Tubs can hold a lot of water, so when the drain is a little clogged, no big deal. Showers on the other hand dont hold much water and so the 2" drain is code and is required. 1 1/2" is not a good idea.:thumbdn:
