My friend is putting in a new Trane 13 seer compressor, heat pump, but keeping his old, 20 year, Trane air handler. The salesman said the old air handler would work fine with the air conditioning part of the heat pump but would not work with the heat portion of the compressor because the pressure of the Freon would be to high for the air handler during the heat cycle. This did not sound right to me since the cooling and heating cycles use the same coils in the handler. Is the salesman right or is he just trying to sell more equipment? Thanks for any information. The 13 SEER coil is larger than the old coil. Thus in heating season the pressures will be too high and in a short time wear out the compressor.

Might be a mix up as how said???? Was the old blower coil a heatpump??. It should take that high head.Ill say this first you have to be nuts to put a new heatpump on that old of coil. No way will he get a seer of 13 with it. Now he should go for a unit with a seer of 15 or more and a HSPF of 8.05 on the heatpump. Also best to use a V/S blower coil unit. They will pay you back.;)
