I have built a desk using wood from an old dock. I have pressure washed the ceosote and now want to seal the creosoted timbers. What should I use?

Welcome to the forums Dan

The finish you would want to use would be an oil base polyurathane but I don't know if the cresote would cause any problems - maybe test poly some scrap first.

It might seal the creosote, but I would never use a polyurathane on a deck. I think the labels on the cans even discourage this use of their product on decks.

For that matter, I would never build a deck with creosote. Haven't they outlawed that stuff.

These are upright posts only. The deck id plywood and Geco.

Is this a deck or a desk???

I would never recomend using poly on a deck!! You can use most any oil base deck stain although light colors might be problematic.

Cresote coatings have been off of the market for 15 yrs or so.

dandub01,

You really need to read your posts BEFORE you click that "Submit Reply" button!!

Is it a deck, or a desk?

"The deck id plywood and Geco" -- What does that mean??

Assuming that it's a deck, WHY would you have used boards that have been creosoted?? (And, except out of a 20 year old bone pile, where did you get them??)

There is NO sealer on the market today that is going to work with creosote. Best thing to do would be to remove (AND PROPERLY DISPOSE OF!!) those boards and start fresh.
