Background information - I have an old home built 1908 with the original brick chimney. It goes from the basement through the 1st floor, second floor, attic, and out the roof. There is about 3 or 4 feet exposed above the roofline of the house. The very top of the chimney (about 1 foot) around the orangish-colored clay flue needs to be repaired. The bricks are loose and the tuckpointed mortar is nearly gone.
1st question - What type of mortar should I use to repair this?
2nd question - Do I have to use a certain type brick due to chimney being so old?
3rd question - When I'm done fixing the bricks, what type of mortar should I use for the 'cap'?
Any helpful hints and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Ryan1979
