i'm adding on to our 1947 block home, and the city wants to know the sizes of lintels above my doors and windows to be sure they are sufficient enough to support extra dead load. i know that above my front door, there are back-to-back 1/4" x 3" angle irons. that is a 36" opening, and so are most of the windows. there is one window 5'9" wide. my question is: what can i tell the city without digging into my block walls to find out what size lintels i have? and if they all are 1/4" x 3" angle iron, would that be o.k. with the city? the house is 4x8x16 block, one-story, in phoenix (no snow load), and the addition will be 2x6 lumber. any takers?

3x4x1/4", 4" overlap up to 8' opening. Google "loose angle iron lintels" to find more info.
