I'm in the process of re-doing a bedroom in my log home. I was planning to replace all of the baseboards, door and window casings and door framing with same size pine boards(for very basic rustic trim) but when I took measurements on the old boards I found that the baseboards are 4" wide exactly, the casings are 3" wide exactly and the door jams? are 5" wide exactly. These are obviously not your regular 1"x4", 1x3 and 15 boards since if they were then they would measure at 3.5", 2.5" and 4.5" wide(nominal dims). What gives? Is it possible to find boards this size? I can't imagine that the original boards were all "ripped" to size.

Without seeing exactly what type of wood it is, one would assume that yes... the boards were all ripped (or milled) to size. In order to duplicate them exactly, you will have to do the same.

It's possible that for some of your trim, a 1x8 (7 1/8" wide) was ripped into 2 pieces... one piece 4" and the other piece 3". It's also entirely possible that all your trim came from a custom mill.

That's what I was afraid of. I imagine that the pine trim boards came with the original milled log kit then. Thanks.
