I am trying to replace a keyless chuck on my drill, The hex screw head inside the chuck (left thread) is stripped. Any suggestions on how to remove the screw so that I can then remove the chuck.

MissTFried,

Do you have any strait-flute extractors? Spiral fluted won't work because of the left-hand thread situation. A small set of strait-flute extractors will cost about $25 at Sears -- I got mine for $10 at a pawn shop.

I would try to hammer (lightly) a strait-flute extractor into the hex opening WITHOUT drilling it out any larger first.

Another *possible*... um... improvised... tool is this: if you have any larger files in your possession, preferably one that is flat, the handle is typically a rat-tail style, and is square. See if the square tip of the file handle will 'not quite fit' in the hex opening. If that is the case, again, gently, tap it into the hex opening and turn it. Normally even the handle of a file is much harder than a fastener and will dig into the fastener enough to give you some grip.

Rather than buying an entire set of extractors, buy an appropriate size torx bit and do as posted, drive it lightly into the confines of the previous hex. Might work, and cheaper.
