I am having reclaimed Fir that was formerly side boards on a Seaspan barge milled into flooring. The fellow doing this for me insists that I needn't kiln dry it nor acclimatize it for any length of time in my home before putting it down as it is over 20 years old and no longer green. He also told me that being a soft wood Fir will absorb ambiante moisture with changes in the humidity very quickly yet this won't matter as it looses moisture just as rapidly. He is late in delivering this wood to me now and I am a month behing in my reno plans due to it! I want to know if he is correct and it is reasonable and safe to lay the floor asap, or should I just put every thing on hold for weeks or months?

It is old wood, but the new milling opens new surfaces to soak up moisture. I would let it sit in the room where it is going for several weeks, just for good luck. Hard to change anything once it is down.

I'm curious as to what kind of floor your going to put the fir wood over?
