I've been told that smaller tiles are more forgiving in terms of cracking. On sheer principle, i can see how this make sense. I'm in the process of picking out tile and am considering smaller tiles for this very reason. I have a proper subfloor installed and prepped but that doesn;t change the fact that my house is over 100 years old :)

Your home is old enough it should be done settling. Get the proper underlayment and I don't think cracking will be a problem. I like the look of bigger tiles, but they make small rooms seem smaller. Just remember, the smaller the tile, the more you have to install, thus the more work.

Small versus large has little bearing on cracking. Any size tile, properly bedded, on a properly built floor, will hold up. Cracking is caused by things under the tile being wrong, in most instances.
