Hi there, I bought a used window AC first of summer. I think it's 10,000 BTU. It has worked wonderfull all summer and still does, nice cool air blowing strong, except 2 days ago the compressor started making noise. Don't know how to describe it really, kind of like a loud hum that just cant quite make it to a full steady hum. It is rather loud though. Still blows cool and strong.
The unit is only about 4 years old and I can't afford a new one. Is there anything I can do to try and fix this? Thanks so much for any and all replys!

nope, you need a tech to fix that.

Why is the compressor making this noise?

You could take the unit outside, remove the cover and hose the coils out real good and the pan area. Avoid the electronics and let it dry good before re-assymbling it. Could be that the condensor coil is dirty causing high head, making the compressor work harder.
If that don't fix it they are pretty much disposable like said. It wouldn't even be worth getting it looked at. The service charge would probably be more than a new unit.

Trouble with buying used stuff that is complex is that you don't know perhaps how well it was taken care of. The filter inside may have gone years clogged up and the blower wheel inside may be caked with dust. That could have caused more wear and tear on compresor also.
Or perhaps it is really NOT cooling as well as it should, and freon is somewhat low. You think it is cool, but maybe not as cool as factory specs. Have you checked it with thermometer? I have seen window units, new, able to put out 48 degrees when turned on inside a warm trailer house! (Low 50's anyway, on most)
I had to check out a cheaper Kelvinator refrigerator yesterday making same kind of obnoxious humming noise (sort of like a normal compressor hum, but louder. Unit is newer. Rear coils were totally clean. Yet the hum. Driving tenant nuts and he said landlord should get him new unit and put this one in a garage somewhere, as it too cools just great. A shame.

Thanks to all the replys! My husband will take it out this weekend and clean it. Keep fingers crossed!
