Hi
I poured a new foundation this june and was going to
start building this august but have run into a few problems
and will have to wait until next spring, My question is
what can i do to protect the foundation for this up coming
winter,it will not be caped. some say to put hay or straw
in the basement,will this help,is their anything else i can
do like cover it up,thanks for any input.

Without knowing where you are and what the winter is like, just make sure the soil under the footings does not freeze.
You can use insulating blankets, straw hay or even sand over and around the footings. Do it early to hold in the natural heat of the soil. If you start moving things around during the cold weather, you can drive the frost deeper.
Snow is a great insulator, but it usually comes too late.
