Bricks, Masonry, Asphalt and Concrete - Concrete Problems - help

After pouring a concrete step, I removed the forms only to find that, towards the bottom, the concrete did not fill in all the way to the form. So it looks like a bunch of craters in the side of the step. What's the proper way to fix this?

Can I just fill it in with more concrete, almost like patching plaster?

Does the filler have to be extra thick so it will stay in place until it dries?

Buy a bag of sand mix. It's just concrete mix without the rocks. Also buy a rubber float or one of those 3M sanding sponges. Mix the sand mix with a little water (or better yet, some concrete bonding agent) so you could form it into a wet mudball if you wanted to. That's the consistency you're going for. Not too wet and not too dry. Dampen the concrete step and pack the sand mix into the craters with the sponge (or rubber float). Fill all the holes and as it dries, use the rubber float or sponge to smooth over the surface. After you've got the craters filled and it is dry, mix up a wetter batch, about the consistency of pancake batter. Dampen the step again and smear a thin coat over all the sides of the step, rubbing with the sponge until you get a consistent finish on the whole thing. This last step is to make the whole thing look like it was done at the same time, instead of looking like a patch. Good luck.
