I'm designing a small pergola for a back door entry that will be attached to the house. The second floor overhangs the first by a foot so there is a soffit right over the entry I'll be working on. I wan't to go under the soffit so I'll have to attach the ledger for the rafters to the door header and one wall stud on each side of the door instead of a rim joist. Is this acceptabe? Also could the ledger go right over the vinyl siding if silicone is pumped into each pilot hole to seal it? I have to be thorough since I'm pulling a permit. thanks

You will want to pull the siding off in an area large enough to work with. You definitely want framing lumber against framing lumber. After you are through, wrap the edges with j channel and cut/replace the siding around the new structure. Not being able to see your structure, we can't comment on a matter of the attachment. However, the local building inspector could give insight as to what he/she will expect on final inspection. They may even make a road trip and look at what you are proposing as a courtesy.
